Penny Mason and Georgia Leonard have been rewarded for their early season performances in their respective Goulburn Murray Cricket competitions with selection in the Northern Rivers under-15 girls team.
Mason plays with Kyabram Fire Brigade in the girls under-15 competition, while Leonard is a member of the Kyabram Redbacks club.
They are in a squad of 14, which is dominated by players from the Bendigo association and is coached by Ron Haeusler.
Mason was unbeaten on 14 in the last round of the Fire Brigade under-15 girls match against Katty Tigers, while Leonard has taken wickets and scored runs this season with the Redbacks inder-13 team.
• A highlight of the under-15 Goulburn Murray Cricket competition will be the meeting of sister sides Kyabram Fire Brigade White and Red this week in the fourth round of cricket.
Fire Brigade White remained on top of the ladder with a come-from-behind victory against Bamawm Locking United last week.
The White Fire Brigade unit looked on track for its first defeat of the season before Sam Bruhn and Jasmine Greiner combined to demolish the BLU middle order.
BLU was 3-85 after 17 overs, chasing the White total of 160 and with 23 overs remaining. Jasmine Greiner then took wickets in successive overs and Bruhn followed up with two late wickets to finish with three for the innings.
Between them they took five wickets for just 16 runs from a combined six overs. Bruhn’s figures of 3-3 from four overs were outstanding, supported by Mia Elliott’s 2-14 from 4.5 overs as BLU was all out in the 32nd over, 16 runs shy of the Fire Brigade White tally.
In the opening two matches of the season Bruhn took three wickets in guiding his team to an unbeaten start to season 2023-24. After the sister side match his team will have a bye in the final round before Christmas.
Ready to strike: Kyabram Redbacks star Georgia Leonard takes a familiar pose (simialr to that of Australian Test hero Steve Smith) as she prepares to face this delivery at Kyabram P-12 College in the thrilling under-13 Goulburn Murray Cricket match with Moama Black.
• Fire Brigade Red responded to Tongala’s first innings of 119 by smashing 163 from 30 overs and maintaining a place inside the top four at Brose Oval on Thursday night.
Opening batsmen Antonio De Pasquale and Archer Backway put on 54 runs in just eight overs, Backway out for 29 (off 24 deliveries, including four boundaries) and De Pasquale retiring on 25.
Will Harrison then hit three boundaries in his 17 off 13 balls, before Ben Chapman arrived to continue the momentum. Chapman struck six boundaries and a six in his 20-ball total of 36.
Later in the innings Mitch Willson made 18 and Isabella Sefton 11 as the Tongala bowlers responded strongly thanks to the form of Baylee Letizia.
Letizia took 3-24 from three overs, with support from Angus Greenman (2-27 from four overs) and Seth Chantler as the Kyabram Fire Brigade team lost its last six wickets for 23 runs.
Raising the bat: Nate Willis was one of several under-13 Kyabram Redbacks players to contribute to a two-run win against previously unbeaten Moama Black. He was not out 17 and supported Jack Halstead, who hit the winning runs from the second last delivery of the innings.
• In Wedneday evening’s under-13 competition Kyabram Fire Brigade remained unbeaten with a 10-wicket-21 run win against Echuca Green.
The Brose Oval match saw Echuca all out for 101, chasing 122 posted by Fire Brigade a week earlier. It was Archie Sheppard who set the early tone, taking 2-9 from his four overs, but that paved the way for Max Gould to take three wickets in three overs.
Gould finished with 3-8, the second time this season he has taken three wickets in a match. He has seven wickets in three matches.
He had support from Jonty Sefton (2-11 from three overs) as the Echuca innings ended in the 27th over.
• Kyabram Redbacks produced a stunning two-run win against previously unbeaten Moama Black at Kyabram P-12 College and the team now sits third on the ladder.
Moama scored 193 in week one of the match, but the Redbacks were quick out of the blocks thanks to 31 off just 16 deliveries from Rhys Parsons (two boundaries and three sixes).
He hit back-to-back sixes and paved the way for Heath Ogden (not out 26, from 36 deliveries) and Jack Halstead (not out 41 from 33 balls, including six boundaries) to lead the run chase.
Nate Willis provided a steady base for the middle order when he was not out 17 at the end of 27 deliveries, followed by Jimmy Badgery (31 from 28 deliveries) and Riley Nicholson (14, with two boundaries).
The Redbacks run chase ended on the second last delivery of the match when Jack Halstead hit a boundary to score the winning runs.
