Rushworth, Stanhope and Girgarre all engaged in closely run losses to Tallygaroopna, Murchison-Toolamba and Avenel, respectively.
Meanwhile, Lancaster and Undera experienced contrasting outcomes, the Wombats thrashing Violet Town, but the Lions being on the end of a heavy loss to Nagambie.
Lancaster vs Violet Town
Lancaster and Violet Town duelled in what was undoubtedly the pick of round nine, the Wombats and Towners both being in finals spots ahead of their meeting at Lancaster Recreation Reserve.
Despite a close clash being expected between fourth and fifth on the ladder, the hosts blew their opponent out of the water in a dominant display, prevailing 54-16.
A statement win for Lancaster moved it up a spot to third, the Wombats overtaking Rushworth after its loss to Tallygaroopna.
Raz Hilton and Jemma Hall’s side will face the Tigers next in another contest between two teams likely to feature in the competition’s post-season make-up.
Tallygaroopna vs Rushworth
Rushworth’s winning run was abrubtly ended by Tallygaroopna.
Rushworth entered its match away to Tallygaroopna in excellent form, having won four games in a row, although the Redlegs sat sixth and were likely to be a challenging opponent.
That would prove the case as the Tigers fell to only their second loss of the season, going down by just three goals in a thrilling contest, 36-33.
As mentioned, Sheree Starling’s side swapped places with Lancaster on the ladder with the loss, but also crucially fell a game back from league-leader Shepparton East.
The Tigers could recover that gap immediately in their meeting with the Wombats this Saturday.
Avenel vs Girgarre
Girgarre was unable to move closer to the finals spots after being defeated at Avenel.
Girgarre’s start to 2026 had not met last year’s standards, but the side had the opportunity with the general bye to regroup ahead of a trip to Avenel, which sat just above it on the ladder.
As expected, the clash at Avenel Recreation Reserve was well contested, the Kangaroos not quite having enough to earn their third win of the season as they went down 61-48.
Now with a 2-6 record after eight games, Girgarre slipped one place on the ladder to 10th with the loss, Murchison-Toolamba jumping above it.
The Roos will be favoured to bounce back into form this Saturday when they take on bottom-placed Undera at home.
Murchison-Toolamba vs Stanhope
Stanhope pushed hard in a defeat away to Murchison-Toolamba.
In another clash between two teams next to each other on the ladder, 11th-placed Stanhope travelled to Murchison-Toolamba eyeing back-to-back wins.
The Lions came close to registering a victory that would have put them closer to the finals spots, narrowly losing 39-30.
Stanhope’s challenge remains consistency, the side having won two of its past four matches, but yet to notch victories consecutively, and it remains 11th after suffering a sixth loss of the season.
The Lions host Tallygaroopna next, the Redlegs likely to enter that clash full of confidence after their win over Rushworth.
Undera vs Nagambie
Undera is still without a win eight matches into its season.
Winless Undera was not expected to challenge second-placed Nagambie when the two sides faced off at Undera Recreation Reserve, although the Lions were coming off a competitive defeat to Stanhope last time out.
The Lakers were a much tougher challenge, which Undera found out in a heavy 73-18 defeat.
The Lions remain the only side yet to taste victory this season as they sit bottom, with a trip to Girgarre facing Amy Reid’s side next.
The only other game in round nine saw reigning premier and league-leader Shepparton East take on lowly Longwood, with the Eagles meeting expectations in a 66-6 thrashing of the Redlegs.
