Girgarre got the jump on Stanhope in the first quarter, with the hosts kicking 3.3 to get their day under way, while the Lions were slow starters, walking away with just three behinds by quarter-time.
Yet, it’s not about how you start, as Stanhope came out all guns blazing in the second period, nailing 7.3 to roar back into the contest.
The Kangaroos didn’t rest on their laurels either, as they kicked four majors of their own, with the home side now trailing by five at half-time despite leading a quarter earlier.
The third term was Giragrre’s time to hit back, sending three shots on goal through the middle, while forcing the Lions into some wayward kicking (1.6).
The Kangaroos retained the lead in the third period, holding a four-point advantage heading into a divisive final stretch of play.
Ultimatley, the match didn’t come down to anything other than a sheer number of chances in front of goal.
Girgarre kept it tidy with 2.3, but it was too little to match the Lions, who’s three goals and a pile of behinds getting it over the line in the end.
The final score was Stanhope 11.18 (84) to Girgarre 12.9 (81).
The Kangaroos will have an uphill battle next week when they face second place Shepparton East in round six, while Stanhope will get a well-earned rest as it has the bye.
