Medals galore for Cleveland collective

Fabulous four: Kyabram Little Athletics Centre’s Cleveland brothers (back, from left) Cruz, Keplar, Tarkyn and Levi (front). They are the first athletics family to feature in a regular Free Press offering.

Apart from having four of the ‘’coolest’’ Christian names that four brothers could ever lay claim to, Kyabram Little Athletics’ Cleveland boys are continuing to let their actions speak louder than words ever could.

As part of the Free Press Athletes in Focus program we will look at some of the little aths’ centre top performing families in the ensuing weeks.

Keplar, eldest of the quartet, competes in the 14 years division and his twin brothers, Cruz and Tarkyn, contest the under-11 division. Baby of the family, Levi, is involved in the under eight competition.

Surprisingly, it is the youngest of the four brothers, Levi, that holds a centre record with his 19.57 metre throw in the under seven vortex.

He is also in front of his more robust siblings in regard to personal bests for season 2022-23, having set 10 new benchmarks. Cruz has eight, Keplar seven and Tarkyn four.

The three eldest boys competed at the 2021 northern country regional titles, powerful thrower Keplar second in the shot put and third in the javelin.

He also set a new personal best in the triple jump.

Keplar also qualified for the state titles, throwing a new personal best in the shot put with his first throw of 7.20 metres (19th overall).

Levi is in Year 1 at Kyabram P-12, Cruz and Tarkyn Year 4, while Keplar is in Year 7.

Neither of the boys parents lay claim to contributing to the athletic genes, but both are on the committee of the Kyabram Little Athletics Centre.

Clutching at straws was the connection of a cousin who has twice made the state team for long jump.

During the summer all four boys are involved in cricket, and in the winter, football.

As for the twins, Cruz has Tarkyn covered in the 100m, but the tables are reversed when it comes to javelin. The pair have both set new PBs for the long jump this season.

Levi looks set to take the mantle from his brothers, already outjumping the twins and teenager Keplar in long jump.

They all have a little way to go to catch Keplar with his throwing, however, the elder statesman’s 22.20m discus throw almost 10m more than Tarkyn’s best.

Tarkyn does, however, have a PB in javelin that is more than a metre in front of Keplar.
