The Deni team had a great day out at Finley, making new friends, achieving new personal bests and taking home a medal or two.
Deniliquin Little Athletics Club is now concentrating on its own carnival, which will be held at the Hardinge St Oval this Sunday, November 9.
“Our club has been regularly hosting the annual carnival for well over 10 years,” Leanne Mulham said.
“While it is a huge task to put on the event, the committee do this as an opportunity for our club members to experience the carnival atmosphere.
Local athlete Connor Wilson and his coach, five time national shot put champion Emma Berg, will both compete at Deniliquin this weekend.
“It is a chance for athletes to meet new people, show sportsmanship, be active, be inspired and to shine.
“Each year we are supported by Little Athletic Clubs in our region that travel and support our event.
“Once again we have big teams of athletes travelling from Swan Hill, Shepperton and Echuca/Moama.
“It is looking like we will have over 240 athletes competing on the day, and it will be a sea of colour, with 17 Little Athletic Clubs represented from both New South Wales and Victoria.”
Mulham said a group of open women athletes will also be competing, showing the younger athletes and their children, you never too old to do athletics.
“We are also delighted to have Emma Berg competing in open women’s shot put.
“Emma is a five time women’s national shot-put champion.
“Connor ‘CJ’ Wilson - an ex- Deniliquin LAC member who is coached by Emma - will also show us his style in the under-17s shot put, and no doubt be breaking the under-17 boys carnival record.”
Members of the public are welcome to spectate and support the athletes’ efforts.
“We would also welcome any extra assistance, either in the canteen or on event for an hour or two,” Mulham said.
