Newman combined with opener Brett Andison, who made 115, in a 229-run second wicket partnership.
The stand proved the cornerstone for a mammoth total of 4/402, one of the highest scores ever in a John McMahon Shield one-day match.
Batting first drop and brandishing a fresh blade, Newman slammed a staggering 22 fours and 15 sixes in racing to an unbeaten 214 off just 123 deliveries in the clash at Kyabram’s Northern Oval.
Andison, hit 11 fours and 3 sixes and fell when the Flames had 286 runs on the board.
Newman continued his onslaught on the visitors bowlers and with support from co-skipper Jake Gascoyne propelled Fire Brigade to the daunting 400-plus total from their 45 overs.
Gascoyne finished with 27 not out from just 11 deliveries.
Newman said his new bat ‘‘felt a bit heavy early’’ and he took some time to find his batting rhythm but ‘‘got to see them a bit better as his innings progressed.’’
He gave a couple of chances, dropped when around 160 and 190, but was generally happy with his effort, which he believes is the fourth time he has scored a double century in club cricket for the Brigade.
‘‘I’m not really a stats man but I think that’s right (four double centuries),’’ he said.
Nondies-Cohuna never looked likely in reply, with its innings coming to an end for 200.
Sam O’Shea top-scored with 50, while Welsh import Archie Sussex again impressed with 45, which included five fours and two sixes.
Opener Patrick Doyle, who juggles his cricket with racecalling duties, scored a hard-hitting 40.
Brenton Sheppard was the pick of the Flames’ bowlers with 3/36 from his eight overs, while Tom Owen (3-60) and Kaine Herbert (2-16) also claimed multiple-wickets.
Tongala’s decision to bat after winning the toss backfired, dismissed for 60 in 34 overs by a Jordan McMahon-led Moama attack.
McMahon took 4/6 off eight overs and received the most support from Michael Hill with 2/9 off five overs.
But 16 runs was the most conceded by any of the seven Moama bowlers used.
Opener Rory Knight with a fighting 23 off 66 deliveries was the shining light at the batting crease for Tongala who had only two other batsmen to make it to double figures.
With openers Michael Hill (21 not out) and Archie Teasdale (25 not out) in aggressive moods, Moama took only 5.3 overs to reel in the Tongala score.
Cooma’s bowlers led by Xavier Fawcett did a good job to restrict Echuca South to 144 in 43.4 overs.
But Cooma collapsed in reply, dismissed for just 64 in 33.4 overs with Ben Eade taking 4/8 and Simon Van Duinan and Asantha Singappuli each claiming two wickets.
In South’s innings Fawcett took 3/21 off nine overs and was well supported by Cooper Fawcett with 2/24 off nine overs and Ethan Palma-Ludeman with 2/22 off six overs.
No play was possible in the BLU v Rochester and Leitchville-Gunbower v Echuca games following overnight storms.
