Paul Newman produced yet another batting masterclass to steer Kyabram Fire Brigade to a respectful score of 6/229.
But it wasn’t enough for the Flames to get the win against Rochester in their round nine one-day John McMahon Shield clash at Rochester on Saturday.

With Fire Brigade winning the toss and batting, Newman found himself at the batting crease early after Kaine Herbert, promoted to opener, was dismissed for a duck.
Chasing a hat-trick of centuries which included a double century Newman came up an agonising eight runs short of the feat, cracking 92 off 78 balls.
He and exciting teenage talent Bohden Learmonth took control of the Rochester attack in a 109-run third wicket stand.
Learmonth again signalled he is a player of genuine talent, making 69 off 84 deliveries, a knock featuring seven fours and two sixes.

A typically aggressive Newman deposited 12 fours and three towering sixes during his stellar knock.
But Rochester batsmen proved up to the challenge and led by opener Brandon Byrne and Angus Martin covered the Flames score with 19 deliveries to spare and six wickets in hand.
Byrne carried his bat for bat for a gritty 84 off 123 deliveries with six fours while Martin’s dazzling knock of 78 of 65 balls contained four fours and four sixes.
Rob Salter with 3/43 off nine overs again was the Flames’ most successful bowler.
Newman has now amassed 460 runs from his last four trips to the batting crease in club cricket at an average of 153.3 after making 30 and a duck in the two opening games of the season.
His season’s tally in the McMahon Shield is 536 runs at 89.3.
Newman has also made 44 and 52 in this period with Hurley Hounds in the GV Bush Bash League T20 competition.

Tongala’s score of 136 was not enough to stop Echuca South from scoring a resounding five wicket win.
Batting first after winning the toss opener Steve Townsend with a fighting half century, Matt Ohlsen (21) and Jayden Tucker (16) were the only Tongala batsmen to make double figures.

Best of the Tongala bowlers was Darin Ohlsen with 3/14 off nine tight overs which included four maidens,
Chasing Echuca’s 8/217, Cooma was never in a threatening position and was dismissed for 139.
Hugo Bell put up the most resistance with 28 while Hunter Fawcett with 22, Cooper Fawcett (17) and Rob Trewin (16) all got starts with the bat for Cooma.
Brendan Moyle with 3/30 off six overs was Echuca’s only multiple wicket taker.
Moama lost just two wickets covering Nondies-Cohuna’s score of 9/134 of which impressive Welsh import Archie Sussex again top scored with 43.
With Anthony McMahon continuing his good season with an unbeaten 79 and Matt Saunders making 42 not out Moama recovered from the early loss of openers Joel Murphy and Fraser Buchanan to round up the Nondies score in 20.2 overs.
BLU took just 22.2 overs to cover Leitchville-Gunbower’s moderate score of 8/125 of which Billy Hawken made 47.
Then BLU’s captain Regis Chakabva and fellow opener Liam Hamilton combined in a 91 runs stand to set up the win for their side.
Chakabva hit five fours and six sixes in racing to 76 off just 47 deliveries while Hamilton made a patient 28.
Lewis Stubbs with 3/26 was the pick of the LG bowlers.
