Former Zimbabwean captain Regis Chakabva was the recipient of two major awards at Goulburn Murray Cricket’s presentation night last week.

The hard-hitting opening batter and wicketkeeper, who captains Bamawm Lockington United, scooped the most runs award with a magnificent tally of 850 and also won the Graham Turner Cricketer of Year award based on umpires votes.
In the Turner Medal he beat Echuca South’s all-rounder Asantha Singappuli with Moama all-rounder Anthony McMahon third.
Chakabva also claimed the runs aggregate with 850 at an average of 65.38. Singappuli was next best with 727 runs
Chakabva also took centre stage on the night as guest speaker at the function when interviewed by MC John Moyle on his rise from not playing cricket until he was in Grade 5 to his ascent to his country’s cricket captaincy and actually beating Australia in an ODI World Cup clash in Townsville in 2002 when he was skipper.
Top wicket-taker in the John McMahon Shield competition was Fire Brigade’s Rob Salter with 34 in a photo finish from finish from Moama’s Michael Hill and Echuca South’s Ashanta Singappuli, each with 33 wickets.
In C-grade, Stanhope’s Jack Hepburn claimed the Champion Player award and the batting aggregate, while Fire Brigade’s Matt Fleming took the bowling aggregate with 20 wickets at a cost of 8.80.
