Hook shot: Jack Carver provided late-innings support for Paddy Westerveld as Fire Brigade White recovered from being 2-1 to post a 172-run total against Tongala.
At 5-36 in just the seventh over the unbeaten status of Goulburn Murray Cricket Under-14 powerhouse Kyabram Fire Brigade Red was under threat against Rochester at Kyabram P-12 College last week.

The opening day of the two-day fixture saw Red win the toss and bat, but lost Archer Backway with the third ball of the innings and then three wickets in seven deliveries to be 4-11 before the end of the fourth over.
But it was another Newman that came to the rescue, the son of champion player Paul.
Familiar footwork: Tayte Newman plants his front foot forward and swings heavily at this delivery against Rochester last week. It is a similar style to his decorated sporting father, Paul, albeit a mirror image (Paul is left handed).
Tayte Newman was joined by Tadgh O’Neill joined at the crease, but O’Neill was out in the seventh over, leaving Ava Pell and Newman to steady the ship.
They did just that, Pell (17) and Newman (31 from 28 deliveries) setting up a strong finish from last week’s hero Charlie Pekin (not out 35 from 21 deliveries, including six boundaries and a six) and Jonty Sefton (13 from 15 deliveries).
Fire Brigade Red went from 6-98 to 7-144 in six overs and finished with 162 from 26.4 overs. Among that total a unique five run collect when a ball got past the wicket keeper and cannoned into a helmet on the ground behind him.
Sam Bruhn also did hit bit late in the innings, striking three boundaries in a 44 ball innings that reaped 20 runs.
Rochester captain Sadie Martin returned season best figures of 4-23 from 3.4 overs for Rochester, supported by Judd Cuttriss (2-12, four overs) and Ben Hewes (2-8 from four overs).
– Not far away, on the Haslem St oval, Kyabram scored 112 against Kyabram Fire Brigade Flames.
The Flames have had a tough start to the season, but through Nicholas Barbagallo and Ethan Greiner (who both took two wickets) they bowled the Kyabram team out in 21.5 overs.
Tim Mawley and Aidan Greiner both took wickets in their opening overs before Xavier Bice and Max Coates led a Kyabram recovery by adding 37 runs for the third wicket.
Centre of attention: Aidan Greiner (centre, with ball) received the congratulations of his teammates after taking a great catch to dismiss Keplar Cleveland off the bowling of Nicholas Barbagallo.
Bice (10) played a support role to Coates, who ended the innings with six boundaries and a six in his unbeaten 40 (from 45 deliveries). Kade Drew (10) was the only other batsmen to reach double figures as Kyabram lost 6-23 mid-way through its innings before Coates’ return (after he retired at the compulsory total of 30).
Barbagallo (2-16) and Greiner (2-1) were supported by Nick Dodos and Mitch Wilson.
– Tongala had the upper hand early in its match with Kyabram Fire Briagde White, at Brose Oval, when Mitch Cornwall took wickets with the second and fifth deliveries of the opening over.
A 33-run stand between Max Stockdale (11) and Ben Chapman (not out 33, six boundaries), set up the recovery as White eventually managed to reach 172 — in spite of losing 5-77 in the middle part of its innings.
Paddy Westerveld’s seven boundary-44 delivery innings realised a top score of 40, while Jack Carver (13) and Archie Sheppard (17) did their bit late in the 39.1 over innings.
Cornwall finished with figures of 3-11 from five overs and Cruz Kreymboreg took 2-16 from his five overs. Jordan Reid also took two wickets in his 4.1 over spell.
Winding up: Keplar Cleveland swings heavily at this delivery for his Kyabram Under-14 side in its match at Haslem St Oval against Fire Brigade White last week.
