The Redbacks travelled to Princess Park where they were sent in by the host.
SYCU was off to a dream start when Alicia Kazayi struck early, the loss of Melissa Parsons leaving Ky 1-0.
Cathy Dervish fought alongside Rebecca Bowles to start building the total and the pair added 28 before Dervish went for 9.
Bowles linked up with Penny Mason and the pair looked to be rolling before an ill-advised run saw Bowles (21) short of her ground.
Mason (31 from 35) took the lead in an inning's best partnership of 43 with newcomer Sarah Chaston, the two progressing the score to 89 before Phoebe Hawker found a way through Mason’s defences.
The remaining batters tacked on another nine in the last few overs, Kyabram setting a solid 6-98 from 20 overs.
SYCU shared the wickets around, Saunders’ 1-9 the best figures.
The Shepparton innings became a game of run conservation, rather than wicket-taking for the Redbacks.
The first, and only, wicket didn’t come until the 12th over, when a smart piece of fielding from Cathy Dervish had Phoebe Hawker (14) run out.
The going had been slow though thanks to some solid line and length from the Ky attack and, when Dianne Poole and Mel Saunders linked up with 52 balls remaining, SYCU was well behind the required run rate, needing 63 for victory.
Saunders entered with intent and scored at faster than a run-a-ball, but the Redbacks never let things get out of hand.
SYCU trailed by 12 with two overs to go, but an economical three-run over from Dervish was followed up by equally solid death bowling from Lacy Parsons in the last.
Parsons gave up six runs and, crucially, no boundaries as Shepparton was left three runs short, the Redbacks finally breaking through for their first win of the campaign.
Poole finished with 31 from 61 and Saunders 30 from 26.
With no wickets assigned to bowlers in the innings it was all about economy rate, Parsons providing the best figures over a large sample size, giving up only 10 runs in four overs.
Emma Roberts and Sophie Sidebottom helped the cause, each bowling single overs for only two runs.
Although still on the bottom of the ladder the Redbacks will hope to keep their momentum as they visit Mooroopna on Saturday in the final round before the Christmas hiatus.
