Lockington Bowls Club
It was another big week in bowls at Lockington.
The Tuesday evening barefoot bowls attracted a field of 20 competitors and the standard was high. The game of the night was skins three-bowl pairs and the winning pair was the Ian Dennis-John Andrea (s) combination with five skins +15 shots. Runners-up were Ian Staig and Ray Brereton (s) with five skins +7 shots ahead of Rod Fiedler and Jeff Carnie (s) with five skins +5 shots. Spider to Andrea and Carnie. Ditch: Leon Laffy.
In the Campaspe Area Pennant competition, the midweek pennant resulted in a victory for our women over Deniliquin 47-28. Denise Gilmore d M. Norton 21-14; Phylis MacFarlane d J. McArthur 26-14.
The weekend pennant found two out of three divisions successful. Division three travelled to Echuca and returned defeated 53-61 and just one rink up. Jim Harris lost to K. McGreevy 22-23; Phillip Cunnington d M. Bennett 18-15; Ray Hanson lost to J. Blair 13-23.
Division four played Tongala and won the day 58-41 with two-and-a-half wins. Dave Thomas d B. Ozols 26-10; Denise Gilmore drew E. Vistirini 15-all; Neil Haines d W. Andrews 17-16.
Division four is fourth on the ladder.
Division five played host to Rochester and shared the rinks for a 45-38 victory. Les Brereton d L. Moon 27-11; Owen McPhee lost to H. Moon 18-27.
The club championship rounds are displayed on the board and members are reminded to have their games completed by the due date. In the 21-up first round, Kim Ray was in devastating form to eliminate Shane Felmingham and progress to the next round.
On Sunday, the club hosted the state pairs championship for men and women. Good fields in both sections provided spectators with some spectacular bowling. Our local hopes Kim Ray and Denise Gilmore (s) were gallant in defeat, losing by four shots, while Brian Kinnane combined with Wayne Cowley (Tongala) to lose the first round by one shot — the final bowl delivered by opponent Steve Cunnington (Echuca).
The semi-finals and final will be played at Lockington next Sunday, starting at 9am.
The club is preparing to hold the annual Moama Bowling Club-sponsored open fours on Thursday, December 28, starting at 9.30am. Contact Russell Shawcross or Ray Hanson for details.
