A spirited effort by Girgarre in round 11 of Kyabram District League football wasn’t enough to stop title threat, Nagambie.
Hosting the Lakers at Girgarre Recreation Reserve, the Roos never really got close to beating Nagambie, but still put in a good innings against a heavyweight.
Nagambie got off to a flier in the opening quarter, nailing six through the middle, with Girgarre doing just enough to stay in the mix with 2.4 of its own.
A huge push by the Roos (5.1), saw them remain within striking distance through the second period, with the Lakers keeping ahead with a five-goal effort as well.
Following the major break, Girgarre couldn’t maintain its first half momentum, adding just 1.4 to the tally, while Nagambie kicked away, a 5.4 quarter sinking the host’s chance of a comeback.
While a trio of goals was a solid way to finish for the Kangaroos, Nagambie’s consistency across four quarters was just too much to handle for a team with only one win under its belt for the season.
The 11.10 (76) to 21.11 (137) defeat, while disappointing, is one of the stronger performances Girgarre has put on this season and is a step in the right direction for a team hunting its second victory.
Jorge Maxwell was awarded best-on-ground for the Roos, while usual suspect Billy Barnes was lethal in front of goal, collecting a bag during the match.
Girgarre will have a good chance to finally get back on the winners’ list in round 12, when it faces the Lions at Undera Recreation Reserve.
