Could this match be a sneak peek into the 2025 KDL A-grade grand final? Maybe.
Shepparton East and Nagambie may have something to say, but regardless, if it is anything like the game on the weekend, we are in for a cracker.
Both teams traded blows throughout the entire match, with both sides’ mid-court stars Sheree Starling and Holly Nelson working overtime to feed their respective goalers.
Janelle Doolan was at the ready to rack up goals for the Tigers, while the Girgarre attacking combination of Jacqui Gahan and Sheridan Deledio was as potent as ever.
Despite taking a narrow lead at the first break, the Tigers had the last laugh in enemy territory.
Before round nine, only the unbeaten Eagles could top the Roos. Well, time to add the KDL’s biggest dark horse to that list.
Rushworth managed to steal the game away from the defending champions at the death, recording a 37-36 victory to cement itself as a true flag contender.
Rushworth’s Montana Mylon, Ruby Oliver and Starling were all awarded best-on-ground honours for their side, while Nelson and Grace Jackson-Kightly were Girgarre’s best.
The Roos will have another competitive match in round 10 when they face fifth-placed Avenel while the Tigers will host Stanhope.
Stanhope vs Longwood
Speaking of the Lions, they pulled one over on the Redlegs in round nine to stay in the finals hunt.
Whether it be senior football or A-grade netball, Stanhope knows how to keep its record dead even — with the win over Longwood keeping its season at a steady 4-4.
Yet, it wasn’t like it was a comfortable victory against the current wooden-spooners, with the Lions only winning by three goals.
But, at the end of the day, a win is a win and if Stanhope is dead set on making the finals, every win counts.
Felicity Hall and Sarah Lange-Richards were the Lions’ best in the 41-38 victory.
Up next on the agenda for the Lions is an uphill battle against formidable Rushworth at Ironbark Stadium.
Merrigum vs Nagambie
For a team hovering at the bottom of the standings, the Bulldogs certainly had a big bark against Nagambie, almost pulling off an upset against one of the league’s best.
The 12-goal loss at the hands of the Lakers won’t sting too much for a side that has struggled in 2025 — in fact, it may serve as a reminder that they can contend with the best on their day.
The final score was 42-54.
Georgia Wilson and Rae Elrayah were named as the Bulldogs’ best in the match with a blockbuster contest with Undera in round 10.
Lancaster vs Avenel
The Wombats couldn’t quite match the level of Avenel in their match-up with the fifth-placed side in round nine.
Despite a valiant effort, Lancaster couldn’t squeeze past the Swans, falling 28-45.
Millie Hill, Jadeja Davies, Karla Ryan and Lexi Botterill were all awarded for their efforts in the match for the Wombats.
Lancaster has a real fight on its hands next week when it faces second-placed Nagambie in round 10.
