Smith came to the wicket in the sixth over of the innings and was the last man out in the 37th over, facing 99 deliveries in his top score of 23.
Tongala managed only 68 after being sent in to bat by Rochester, both openers in Braith Northausen and Will Brennan removed without scoring.
Rochester opener Liam Edge took both scalps, and when Smith arrived, Tongala was 4-4, an 18-run stand between he and Jessie Johnstone (12 from 19 deliveries) temporarily halting the onslaught.
Tongala failed to strike a boundary in the almost 37 over long innings and only two players reached double figures.
Edge sent down 3.3 overs and returned with figures of 3-3, while Jordy Rasmussen made it successive weeks of three-week hauls with 3-1 from his four overs.
Charlie Bird offered resistance to Rochester’s bowling onslaught, facing 21 deliveries for his single run return in a half hour stay at the wicket alongside Smith. When he was run out the Tongala team lost its final four wickets for 19 runs.
River Townsend, still eligible for under-14 competition, faced 35 deliveries batting at number 10 and remained not out when day one of the two-day battle concluded.
– Kyabram Fire Brigade faced the all powerful Moama outfit at Northern Oval after Moama had scored a 145-run first round victory.
Moama won the toss and batted, a 69-run partnership coming from just 14 overs before Archie Teasdale was removed by Riley Carver for 47.
His opening partner, Luke Stone, retired soon after for 50 (from 72 deliveries) and by the 32nd over Moama was 2-188 when Oscar Richards was dismissed for 30 by Lachlan Carver.
Rhys Drennan (44) was removed by Oliver Barnett as Moama lost 4-16 after its initial domination of the Fire Brigade attack.
Barnett bowled the only maiden over of the match in his figures of 1-27 from eight overs, while Riley Carver finished with 2-22 from seven overs and Lachlan Carver 2-25 from four overs.
Fire Brigade beat Cooma in its first match of the season by 60 runs, but has the job ahead of it on Friday night in a big run chase.
– Hayden Fawcett had seven different batting partners as his Cooma team struggled against the strong Echuca bowling attack, which rolled Tongala for less than 100 in the opening week of the season.
After a round one duck, Fawcett scored almost half his team’s total and batted for 26 overs to finish unbeaten on 40.
He struck four boundaries from his 79 deliveries and shared in a 34-run stand with Max Carroll (13), who was the only other player to reach double figures.
Cooma lost its last four wickets for four runs in the space of 11 deliveries.
– Bamawm Lockington United opening batsman Kade Pearse was the dominant force in the match against Echuca South.
Pearse was unbeaten with 56 when the South innings came to a close after 40 overs, sharing in a series of partnerships with Charlie Mundie (26), Blake Gibson (17) and, late in the innings, Charlie McIntyre (not out 18).
