Free Press readers on postie Lawrie Casey’s mail route this week might notice a gleam in his eye and perhaps even a tune on his lips (Return to Sender is his on-the-job favourite) after he took out the June Monthly Medal at the weekend.
On a miserable day for golf (and most other pastimes) Lawrie won A-grade with a round of 84-11-73 and in doing so also took out and his first Monthly Medal shirt since going back-to-back in April – May 2021.
In an even performance Lawrie had 42 on each nine with his only real blemishes being double bogeys on the par three third and 12th holes and a further double bogey on the 16th (the hardest hole on the course) before a birdie four on the par five 18th clinched the medal.
Parkland’s Alex Kydd was the A-grade runner-up with a round of 83-9-74 with Casey’s nearest challenger for the medal being Peter Blackmore with nett 75.
Alan Curnow took out B-grade with 101-23-78 by three shots from Peter Sherman with 107-26-81 on a difficult day at the office.
There was no ladies’ comp on the day.
Ball comp winners were Peter Blackmore with nett 75 along with Pooch McHale, Ash Kuiper and Kyle Kydd who all had 77.
Nic Casey (third ) and Mick Coyne (12th ) won the A-grade nearest the pin balls and Nic also took away the voucher on the 15th.
Best gross score balls went to Ash Kuiper (81 off the stick) and Alan Curnow in B-grade with 101.
One bright spot on the day was the guest appearance of former captain Doug Kajewski (now living at Mount Martha) who joined the field for the medal round and it was a treat for Doug’s many friends to have him at the club for the day.
On Tuesday the recently promoted Mick Pell took out his first A-grade trophy with 37 points from Kevin Bauerle who won the countback for runner-up from Rochester’s Colin Johnson with 35 points.
Kevin Wootton won B-grade with 36 points in a countback from Ron Dixon.
Colin picked up a ball in the ball comp as did David Collins with 34 points, John Neale (33), John Burrows (33) Graeme Harrison (33), Pooch McHale (33) and Ian Scurrah (33).
Nearest the pin trophies were won by Daryl Harrison, Lindsay Tatterson (both on the third ) and David Collins who won the voucher on the 15th.
Finally, in a follow up to last week’s scoop (re a possible foray into politics for our Pres) it seems that while Mick was clearly surprised, nay shocked, by the accuracy of my information, it would be fair to say that the general membership seemed oblivious to the ramifications at a local level.

Club member Judy Sutton was our generous sponsorfor our stroke and medal round last Wednesday.
Tracey Wade returned easily the best score of the day to win A-grade, the Monthly Medal and the A-grade scratch with 90-18-72 and also the least putts award with 27.
Jenni Bauerle was runner-up with 94-15-79 and Helen Emery was nearest the pin.
In B-grade Gill Thorsen led the field with 103-27-76 one shot ahead of runner-up Marlene Topp, 117-34-77.
Judy Greer was nearest the pin and also won the B-grade scratch with 103 on a countback from Gill Thorsen.
Our division two pennant team went down 2-3 to Shepparton in the final at Numurkah.
Unfortunately, due to the rescheduling of the final to the first week in June, three members of the original Valley View team were unavailable.
Three substitutes were qualified to play.
After a tight struggle over 18 holes the score was locked at two wins and two losses each with the fifth pair required to play on to decide the winner.
Helen Armstrong was the Valley View player required to play on and it took till the 21st hole for Shepparton to take the win.
Well done to all players.
Merrigum Golf Club
The first full weekend of winter was certainly one to test the resilience of Merrigum golfers and, no doubt, those from a lot further afield as well.
The cold weather hit with a vengeance, hence a much-reduced field for Saturday’s Gentsomes competition for teams of three.
While the field was smaller, it was made up of brave (read foolhardy) golfers keen to battle the elements.
In Gentsomes the three players all drive and then they all play mostly from the best drive, unless someone is struggling to get their minimum quota of drives in, then all could be playing from a much less desirable place on the course.
From the chosen drive each player plays out the hole on their own and the best two stableford scores count.
Simon and Craig Doherty combined with the third musketeer Clint Prygoda to win the day with a very good 89 points.
It is difficult to know what a winning score in this format of golf is, but the trio was just one point shy of last year’s winning score.
It was easily the best team on the day, however, finishing a wide margin of 11 points ahead of the runners-up Geoff Kirk, Tony Borrelli and Jeff Newham, who finished with 78 points.
Nearest the pins were won by Ash Sanders on the ninth, Geoff Kirk on the jackpot 12th and Simon Doherty on the 14th.
The winning team also won the chook shed challenge with 21 points.
Following golf an afternoon tea was held to farewell long time member, committee member and former captain Russell Dunn prior to he and his family moving to Melbourne.
We wish Russ and his family all the best for their future in Melbourne.
A good contingent of Merrigum golfers braved even worse weather on Sunday to visit Hill Top for an Ambrose event.
We were nearly one player short though; he would still be out at Curr Road waiting for a Stones or Port had he not been asked where he was playing the next day.
It was with some relief his partner saw him floating into the Hill Top car park with time to spare.
Saturday’s event is stableford.
