COVID-19 has thwarted attempts for two years to celebrate the milestone and Girgarre is now planning for the celebrations to be held at its first home game next season.
The club is now waiting on the Kyabram District Football League draw to be announced to lock in that date. That could be even as early as this week.
And instead of the original plans to stage the reunion over a weekend it will now be held on the one day.
It will include the launching of Athol (Doc) McDonald’s centenary book on the club’s history and the naming of the club’s greatest team.
‘‘It won’t be (celebrations) as big as originally planned but it will still be a big day,’’ outgoing president Brendan Nicholson said.
Nicholson, who has been seven years in the role has stepped down to be vice-president, with former junior vice-president Matt Graetz taking the presidential reins.
A committee of 17 has been formed which includes several new faces.
New coach Damian Cupido was officially welcomed by the club at a function at the weekend.
Cupido has announced official training will start this week with sessions on Monday and Wednesday nights leading up to Christmas.
Girgarre has also announced Rory Young has been reappointed reserves coach and Paul Parsons thirds coach again with Nic Varcoe his deputy.
Goal-kickers line up for Rochy
Rochester Football Club has added some talented young blood to its ranks for next season, which it hopes will boost its goal-scoring capacity.
James McPhee has returned from Heathcote League club Heathcote, for whom he kicked 24 goals in 11 games this season.
He is the son of former Rochester gun Anthony ‘Tank’ McPhee, the GVL games record holder.
The other signing is Elmore young gun Mitch Cricelli who won the Heathcote League’s Rising Star award this season and who has been a prolific goal-kicker in his junior days.
Be like Strathmerton
Cobram Yarroweyah United Cricket Club was forced to pull up stumps before the season started due to a lack of players.
The club has fielded teams in the Murray Valley Cricket Association for the past 20 years and is hoping to ‘‘do a Strathmerton“.
Strathmerton Cricket Club went into recess three years ago but has rebounded and will field sides in the association’s B and C-grade competitions this season.
Unfortunately though history shows a lot of clubs that go into recess never return.
Lions still on the march
Seymour Football Club is doing everything to build on this year’s improved season with former AFL defender Michael Hartley its latest signing.
Hartley played a total of 49 AFL games with Essendon and Hawthorn over six years, including three games this year.
But Seymour will only get Hartley’s services when he is not required by Collingwood reserves and coaching commitments with Collingwood’s AFL Women’s team.
Good mates, current Seymour players Ben Clifton and Nick Dundon, have been key to securing Hartley, who stands an imposing 198cm and has nominated Seymour as his home club. As well as a player, Hartley will also be used in a coaching role whenever he plays with Seymour to assist in his future ambitions to coach.
United to join the competition
Shepparton United Football Club will have a side in the Northern Country Women’s League, all going well in 2022.
It was to join the competition last year but with the pandemic, had to mark time to make its debut.
Grant Searle, who says he is very passionate about women’s footy and has worked for five years in youth girls development, with Dean Walton will coach the team.
Shepparton United will join other GVL teams in Echuca, Benalla Saints, Mooroopna and Tatura
Kyabram girls where are you?
Cam’s milestone
Tongala Football Club star Cameron Ilett completed a milestone in the AFL Northern Territory League at the weekend.
His appearance for Nightcliff in its 34-point win over Palmerston was 200th in the league.
The 36-year-old who has committed to playing with Tongala again next season was prominent in the clash with his two goals helping in the win and keeping Nightcliff at the top of the ladder after seven rounds.
