It’s the Australian Open.
Tongala is one of them, hosting a 1 Point Slam tonight.
Tennis Victoria, through the grand slam, has simply offered regional clubs a chance to put on a qualifying round — Rochester and Echuca tennis clubs are set to hold their own slams at a later date.
A small $10 entry includes a barbecue meal, and the club is shaking it up with some other fun games as well — also using the event to launch its new season.
It’s open to players of all levels, ages and abilities to take part.
And the winner will be off to the regional, then possibly state championship equivalent.
Those competing could also bring many financial gains for the club.
By hosting, Tongala could claim a $5000 grant, should the winner do the unthinkable and go on to claim the state championship title.
In this instance, the club also goes into the draw to be represented by a player in the national event at Rod Laver Arena in January.
If the truly unthinkable happens and the national champion comes from Tongala, the club wins a whopping $50,000 tennis grant.
