Tough draw for Olivia at Vic Open

Unbeaten start: Geoff Beattie is one of three Goulburn Valley playing area Division one pennant skips to have won all three of his matches this season.

Olivia Cartwright will headline Kyabram’s assault on the 2022 Henselite Victorian Open on Saturday when she contests the open women’s title on her home rink.

She has a tough draw, with sectional matches against her decorated Moama Steamers teammate Cassandra Millerick and Yarrawonga’s Claire Sanders, who is in the over-60s state squad.

Olivia will need wins in both those matches to progress to the knockout stage.

Eighteen-year-old Cartwright played in the open level three years ago, but did not advance.

She and father David made it to the round of 16 in the mixed pairs event at that same tournament.

Olivia Cartwright is playing with Millerick, who she bowls as lead to in the Bendigo Premier League, in the pairs on Sunday at Sheppaton Park and on Monday is competing in the triples at East Shepparton.

Friday is the mixed pairs event, but she will not be playing due to her having her VCE graduation ball on Friday evening.

Younger brother Josh is playing in mixed, singles, pairs and triples, while Jacob is in the pairs and triples.

The two will play in the men’s triples with their father David at Mooroopna on Monday.

Three rounds into the flood-affected Goulburn Valley playing area Division one pennant bowls season only two teams remain unbeaten.

That will be reduced to one after the next round of matches as those two teams, Shepparton Golf and Shepparton Park, meet in a round-six blockbuster.

Prior to that match though there is a general bye in the competition for the staging of the Henselite Victorian Open, which will start on Friday, November 18, in Shepparton.

Kyabram, fourth on the ladder with two wins, could be the major benefactor of the top-two clash on November 26 (state election day) if they can manage a round-six win against fifth-ranked Tatura Hilltop.

It will be a return to his old club for David Cartwright, who has had a tough start to the season with three successive defeats.

Cartwright returned to Kyabram this year to bowl alongside three other new skips for season 2022-23, Connor Trewren, Geoff Beattie and Brett Reiner.

Beattie and Trewren remain unbeaten from the opening three weeks of the season, the team’s two winners in a 12-shot win against promoted Mooroopna at the Kyabram rink on Saturday.

Beattie was a seven-shot winner and hard-driving left-handed Trewren won by nine on his rink, influencing a 100-88 scoreline (14-4).

They are among only three skips, along with Shepparton Park’s Paul Nichols, to have three wins from all three rounds to start the season.

Kyabram is now just 10 pennant points off top-team Shepparton Park, which it is drawn to play on Saturday, December 10.

In the lead up to that match it has the Tatura match and then a round-seven appointment with East Shepparton.

Tallygaroopna sits third on the ladder, in spite of Kyabram beating it in its opening match of the season.

The reigning premier had a percentage-boosting 75-shot win against East Shepparton on Saturday.

A pair of 23-shot wins for two of its skips set up the 135-60 result.

The Kyabram win came on the back of Paul McInnes and Darren Boswood’s return, McInnes slotting back in as third to Trewren and Boswood as second to Cartwright.

The Cartwright rink lost by five shots, while Reiner suffered the same fate on his rink.
