The Wombats got the best of Stanhope for the second time this season at the weekend, rolling through the higher-placed Lions 46-27 at Lancaster Recreation Reserve.
Results were inconsistent for Lancaster throughout the season.
The Wombats' goal percentage is the seventh best in the league, but the side ends the season in 11th with a record of 5-11.
Four of Lancaster’s five wins came against the sides that finished sixth, seventh and eighth, while the Wombats went down to some of the lower table teams around them.
For Stanhope, a final record of 6-10 sees it finish in eighth.
The Lions’ results list reads more conventionally, as the team only defeated sides that earned the same number of competition points or fewer on the final ladder.
Rushworth v Undera
There was nothing to be gained or lost by Rushworth aside from confidence as it headed into the final round secure in fourth position.
A lowly Undera side was the opposition and the Tigers were in cruise control for much of the contest.
Rushworth rolled through Undera Recreation Reserve and strode out a 55-21 winner.
The Tigers (12-4) are now preparing for an elimination semi-final against Avenel, to be held at Merrigum Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
Avenel won three fewer games in the regular season, but the Swans’ confidence will be up after they knocked off Nagambie (13-3) at the weekend.
Merrigum v Shepparton East
The Bulldogs had an unenviable final week assignment against the unbeaten league leader.
Home court provided no safeguard for Merrigum as the presumptive title favourite picked up the dominant 54-19 win.
Merrigum (7th) just missed finals by table position, but finished three games back from sixth-ranked Tallygaroopna.
The Bulldogs did well among their peers in the middle and lower table, but found themselves a step below the finals sides throughout the campaign.
Girgarre
Girgarre was done a huge favour by Avenel in the final round.
While the Roos sat idly with the bye, the Swans upset Nagambie 50-35, preventing the Lakers from usurping the blue and whites for second spot.
Girgarre will now play the unbeaten Shepparton East on August 30 at Longwood Recreation Reserve for a spot in the grand final.
