Gus’ sports snaps
Kyabram’s 2025 Goulburn Valley League premiership line-up has another hole in it, with young talent Angus Scoble chancing his luck at VFL level.

The 19-year-old will try to break into Queensland’s VFL side Southport, a powerhouse in the competition in recent seasons.
He has been training with the Gold Coast-based side for several weeks.
A product of Kyabram juniors, Scoble spent the 2024 season with Tongala in the Murray League but returned to the Bombers last season and played on a wing in their premiership side against Rochester.
He is a versatile, mobile utility who can hold down most positions but will be tested trying to break into a Southport side that is expected to be a force again in the VFL this year.
Scoble joins other Kyabram teammates from last season in Archie Watt (West Coast Eagles), Tom Holman (Tongala), Anthony Depasquale (Werribee), Nic Jephson (Newtown Chilwell) and Liam Ogden (Ascot Vale) from last year’s Kyabram flag-winning side who have moved on this year.
Depasquale and Ruben Rhode, who is also training with Werribee, have nominated Kyabram as their home club and will play with it when not selected by their VFL side.
Rhode and other former Kyabram players in Rhys Clark and Aaron Hayes are making a return to Kyabram this season.
Clark and Hayes both started their football careers in Kyabram junior teams.
Gold Coast-based Clarke played with Kyabram two years ago after a stint with VFL side Southport and last year in the AFL Cairns League.
Tongala’s mobile utility, Jack Sinclair, is also a new face at Kyabram this season.
Kyabram assistant coach Corey Carver said he was naturally disappointed with the number of departees from a flag-winning side but hoped those trying to play at a higher standard could fulfil their ambitions.
‘‘A lot of players who were knocking on the door last year will get their chance this season, so all is not lost,“ he said.
‘‘We are confident we can be competitive again, acknowledging that a lot of clubs are expected to make improvement.“
Carver has been happy with the Kyabram numbers at training and those who will be attending a club pre-season camp at Heathcote this weekend.

How serious is Echuca about rejoining the Bendigo Football League?
My mail is it is “pretty serious”, particularly if a move for the Goulburn Valley and Kyabram District leagues to continue to be administered by the AFL-GVL hub eventuates.
AFL hubs are being phased out this season across Victoria but the GVL and the Kyabram league are pressing to have AFL Victoria continue pulling the strings for their leagues.
Another contentious point in the potential shift saga is apparently Echuca’s concerns of the GVL player points system, forfeits in lower grades in the GVL, future management plans of the GVL and possible changes in the GVL junior leagues.
Echuca plans to conduct an information session to explain the situation to its club members before making any further moves on a possible shift of leagues.
Echuca and the GVL, including its president Peter Foott, recently had talks at which the Murray Bombers aired their thoughts and grievances and the GVL had its chance to reply.
Echuca joined the GVL from the Bendigo League in 1974 and has been the league’s powerhouse for the past few seasons, with Kyabram thwarting its bid to win four successive flags in 2025.

At last.
Construction has started on the $4.5 million WB Hunter Pavilion at Princess Park, Shepparton, more than three years after the 2022 floods destroyed the original facility.
The new building, home of Goulburn Valley League club Shepparton Swans, will be raised several metres above flood level and include updated change rooms, tiered seating and undercover areas. Local clubs have endured temporary facilities since the disaster.
Work is expected by the end of this year.

Shepparton Golf has appointed Brad Orr as its head lawn bowls coach for 2026-27.
It will be a homecoming for the Victorian representative after two seasons with Essendon in Melbourne's Premier Pennant competition.
Orr previously led the Golfers to multiple finals over a decade and succeeds Kris Ferguson, who delivered premierships for the club in both weekend and midweek divisions.
