One of those author talks is local author and mother Benita Bensch discussing motherhood, identity, finding yourself and exploring 'matrescence', the process of becoming a mother and how it affects a woman’s sense of self.
Benita’s new book Seen Again, offers guidance for modern mothers feeling lost and disconnected from their former selves.
“I am a mother of four,” Benita said.
“My husband and I are farmers north of Moama where we have a cropping enterprise.
“I'm involved in our farm business, and I also work as a coach who works with mums and farming families.
“I do lots of different things, including writing, speaking, running events and workshops, which all centre around supporting mothers to feel seen and to reconnect with who they are after having children.”
Benita’s work stems from personal experience.
“About four years into my motherhood journey, I hit what I call the black hole, where I felt like I was invisible and like I'd lost myself,” she said.
“Matrescence is the emotional, psychological, physical, spiritual and social transition of becoming a mother.
“My book explores that profound change.
“Helping people to know and love the new version of themselves, rather than fighting to get back to this pre-motherhood self that we grieve for.”
