'Technology saved me': Smith rides his luck to prosper

Smith had already been dropped in the slips when he appeared to take a walk towards the pavilion after Ebadot Hossain and wicketkeeper Litton Das went up in unison with teammates.

The original decision was not out and on review 'Snicko' showed no edge.

Smith was asked in the press conference after play whether he had hit it.

"I think so, yeah," he said.

"Was I lucky. It seems so, yeah. You've got to take it sometimes."

Smith said the technology was "normally pretty good".

"Maybe I didn't nick it. I certainly felt something," he said.

"If I was given out I was going to walk off. Technology saved me today I guess."

The incident will no doubt create more debate about the technology used in Australia. Ricky Ponting is not a fan, nor are several of the current Australian players.

"This technology that we are using here (in Australia) is simply not as good as technology that's used in other countries," the former Aussie captain told the Seven Network last December during the Ashes series.

"You talk to the umpires, they'll tell you the same thing. They can't trust it."

Bangladesh hero Hasan Mahmud (6-55) was the destroyer with the ball.

He said the bowling group regarded the invitation to get first use of the wicket as a "great opportunity" and there were questions raised about why Australia, with their strongest bowling attack on paper back together again, chose to field.

Smith said he wasn't sure why captain Pat Cummins decided to bat first in tricky conditions, but suggested early on day two would be a good opportunity for the Australian bowlers to strike.

"I'll go back to yesterday, the guys thought the wicket was rock hard," Smith said.

"When we turned up this morning it was a bit tacky, I think just from the dew potentially.

"It will be interesting to see tomorrow morning if it is the same. It definitely hardened up as the day went on but ... if it softens up I think it will be tricky to bat again."

Bangladesh will resume day two at 1-96 so Australia will need wickets to get back in the match. Smith said the visitors went about their work with aplomb.

"(It was) tricky initially. The wicket was a bit tacky and the ball was seaming quite significantly," he said.

"I thought they bowled pretty well this morning. It was challenging."
