Deniliquin celebrates 50 years of NAIDOC

Deniliquin and district have wrapped up a vibrant NAIDOC Week, with the community celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history and achievements while marking 50 years of NAIDOC.

The week opened with a morning tea at the Deniliquin Local Aboriginal Land Council office, followed by a flag-raising ceremony at the police station and a barbecue at the hospital.

Elders were honoured on Tuesday with a full day of activities and shared stories at Four Post, before youth took centre stage on Wednesday through a Dharnya Centre cultural trip and Yarkuwa Children’s Day.

Thursday’s Koori Market brought together local organisations, families and stallholders, alongside art and dance workshops at Yarkuwa that highlighted storytelling and creative expression.

The celebrations concluded on Friday with the Community Sports Day at Deniliquin Stadium, where games and activities for all ages ran throughout the day, supported by a community barbecue.
