Rushworth P-12 College students joined Greater Shepparton Secondary College students at La Trobe University Shepparton Campus to participate in the two-day program.
Delivered by Goulburn Murray Community Leadership, the program empowers young people to strengthen their leadership abilities, build confidence, develop teamwork and communication skills and discover ways to contribute to their schools and communities.
Students participated in learning activities challenging them to step outside their comfort zones, build relationships with peers, respond to feedback and collaborate under time pressure.
Working in teams, participants identified issues affecting young people in their communities, explored different perspectives and developed solutions.
Participants’ solutions included expanding volunteer opportunities for young people, improving access to youth mental health support, enhancing local sporting facilities and creating more employment pathways for young people.
Participants then presented their ideas to judges including City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali, Victoria Police leading senior constable and multicultural officer Leigh Johnson, and Salvation Army north-east Victoria youth participation worker Jim Gow, who provided valuable feedback, encouragement and insights.

The collaborative team projects gave participants hands-on experience to apply their newly developed leadership, teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills.
“One of the best parts of the day was making new friends and meeting people from different schools, as well as improving our leadership skills,” Rushworth P-12 College student Makayla said.
“It was a great experience because we had the opportunity to share our ideas and build our confidence in public speaking, teamwork and leadership.”
The program concluded with a graduation celebration where participants received certificates in recognition of their achievements.
