The awards celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of health services, healthcare workers and health volunteers across the state.
They include 15 categories with three finalists in each, as well as a Health Volunteer Honour Roll, which will see several volunteers who have clocked up 30 years of service to their community inducted.
GV Health and partner hospital The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (Eye and Ear) are finalists in the Partnering in Healthcare category for their collaboration to establish Victoria’s first regional public cochlear implant surgery service.
The partnership was established to address the challenges regional patients face in accessing cochlear implant treatment, which has traditionally required multiple trips to Melbourne for assessment, surgery and follow-up care.
GV Health has also been recognised in the Excellence in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing category as a co-contributor on the Lotjpa Yapaneyepuk (Talk Together) About Cancer Trials project, alongside the Border Medical Oncology Research Unit and Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative Ltd.
GV Health chief executive Matt Sharp said the recognition reflected GV Health’s leadership in developing better healthcare for regional communities.
“Regional health services understand their communities and can turn that knowledge into better health outcomes,” Mr Sharp said.
“Our partnership with Eye and Ear has and will continue to bring life-changing cochlear implant surgery and specialist hearing care closer to home for people in the Goulburn Valley.
“Through Lotjpa Yapaneyepuk, we are developing culturally safe resources to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples better understand and access cancer trials across Australia.”
GV Health is up against a partnership between Ambulance Victoria and Northern Health, and the Royal Children’s Hospital in the Partnering in Healthcare category, while its competition for the Excellence in Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing category includes Alfred Health and Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative.
Mr Sharp said the nominations showed what GV Health’s people could achieve when their expertise and commitment were combined with those of the hospital’s partners.
Winners will be announced at the VPHA Gala Night on October 14.
