On Tuesday, May 12, they were celebrated on International Nurses Day.
The event was established by the International Council of Nurses in 1974, marking the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
Kyabram District Health Service joined the global community in celebration, with the team acknowledging the exceptional work its nurses perform daily.
KDHS director of clinical services Kelly Scorey delivered a heartfelt message of thanks, recognising the care nurses provided, the smiles they shared and the lives they touched each day.
“Today we celebrate the incredible nurses of KDHS — the calm in the chaos, the friendly faces, the caring hands and the everyday heroes who make a difference in every moment.”
“Your skill, heart and humour help make KDHS such a special place. We are so grateful for every shift, every challenge conquered and every caring conversation.”
At KDHS, the day combined reflection and celebration, with all nurses on shift receiving special meals, from sandwiches and hot bakery items to a pizza dinner for the evening crew.
To mark the occasion, KDHS invited patients, staff and community members to nominate a nurse who had made a difference in their lives.
The result was an outpouring of support, with key themes praising nominees for their kindness, dedication, humour and heart.
In the sentiments, nurses were celebrated for their tireless willingness to help, their warm and cheerful presence, their devotion to patients and their infectious energy on the ward.
This year, the theme of International Nurses Day was ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.’
The theme is a call for investment in the nursing profession, with the theme's focus sending a message that to maximise the life-saving impact of the nursing workforce, nurses must be empowered with safe, fair work environments.
The theme comes at a critical time, as global health faces challenges ranging from workforce shortages to rising healthcare demands.
The day served as a reminder to celebrate nurses across the world for their skills, compassion, dedication and service to healthcare systems and patient care.
