In the lead-up to Mother’s Day on May 12, Kyabram café Burnt Butter has revealed a new mural in its front window, honouring the special women in our lives and encouraging participation.

The twisted tree faces Allan St from the Burnt Butter window with green, yellow and orange leaves adorning the intertwining branches.
If you look close enough, you will see handwritten dedications to mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, aunties and female figures.
Dedication: A community member’s note to the special people in their life.

This touching mural, masterminded by Burnt Butter’s Jess Scoble, pays tribute to the significant women in our lives.
“It was based around Mother’s Day, but it’s also more about the special women in our lives — because you don’t have to be someone’s child to have that person be a role model or have that person be a guiding figure for you,” Ms Scoble said.
Whether she's your mother, grandmother, best mate or the neighbour who brings in your bins at night — Burnt Butter is inviting their patrons to celebrate the women most important to them by writing on a leaf and displaying it on the “family tree”.
“I was thinking how we could incorporate a community, and then just thought of a family tree because there are so many connections and so many branches that branch off a family tree, so it really just comes from that,” Ms Scoble said.
Appreciation: The mural encourages people of all ages to write a message to a female who is special to them.

“It’s surprising how many men are writing on them as well for the appreciation of their wives or their mothers, or the other important women in their lives,” she said.
Ms Scoble, having relocated from sunny Queensland six years ago, aims to transform the café into a hub for community connection, beyond just serving coffee and biscuits.
“I want to show that I’m putting effort and changing things, and doing things involving people,” she said.
“So many businesses become content with what they are doing — I’ve got regulars — but you’ve got to do something to keep people coming, and this is one way to create that community around the café.”

Importance of recognition: It’s not just mothers being recognised, but any woman who is important to someone can be recognised on the Burnt Butter tree.
