Currently, Shepparton and Mooroopna are only connected by one road that can support heavy vehicles, the Peter Ross-Edwards Causeway, which had to be closed during the 2022 floods.
An alternative flood-proof route would avoid major diversions during flooding periods and reduce the amount of heavy vehicles passing through central areas of Shepparton and Mooroopna.
The absence of a second crossing has been a long-running issue for the area, even before the 2022 floods highlighted the vulnerability of current infrastructure.
“When flooding disrupts that connection, the impacts are felt across our community, from people trying to get to work or medical appointments to businesses trying to keep supplies moving,” Mr Sali said.
Mr Sali has met with advocacy body Committee for Greater Shepparton, which has invited all announced candidates to meet with it to discuss its election priorities, which include the additional river crossing.
Talisman Menswear owner Paul Jerome said the region could no longer afford to wait.
“We have one causeway, and once it’s blocked, we’re cut off,” he said.
“There is no secondary east-west connection.
“We need a second crossing now, because the longer we leave it the more it will cost.”
Mr Sali said he would continue advocating for the project.
“It’s about safer streets, stronger businesses and a more reliable connection between Shepparton and Mooroopna,” Mr Sali said.
