Hosted by the Murrumbidgee Local Health District Specialist Palliative Care Team and the Finley Local Health Advisory Committee, the session attracted about 20 attendees keen to learn more about the options and support services available to people living with incurable illnesses and their families.
Presentations were delivered by a palliative care nurse, social worker and the district’s voluntary assisted dying co-ordinator, while local solicitor John Taylor outlined the importance of wills and powers of attorney.
Attendees heard how palliative care can provide much more than symptom management, with services including emotional and grief support, assistance for carers and families, advance care planning, referrals to home help and financial support services, and access to equipment needed for home-based care.
Importantly, palliative care is available to people at any stage of an incurable illness, even while they continue receiving treatment.
Anyone can make a referral, provided the person concerned has given their permission.
Community members seeking more information or wishing to arrange a referral can contact the Community Care Intake Service on 1800 654 324 or speak with their local medical team.
