Valley View
The remarkably consistent Geoffrey Strachan put together the stand out round in Saturday’s Stableford event, winning B Grade with the excellent score of 41 points as he finished four shots clear of his nearest challengers.
Three front-nine pars were the feature of his round, with his four on the par four second yielding four of his 21 points on the outward leg of the course.
Bud Thorsen finished as the B Grade runner-up with 37 points on a countback from Rory Kerr.
The ubiquitous Pooch McHale was the A Grade winner with 39 points, a birdie three on the 17th being the highlight of his round.
Ubiquitous? You bet. Not only does he fill key roles as Valley View’s lead mechanic and a key member of our grounds staff, Pooch is also the GV Vets Coordinator running the admin side of the monthly event.
If that is not enough, he is now branching out into valet parking after an impressive parking audition/demonstration last week.
The more conservative Kelly Cheong finished as runner-up to Pooch with 36 points.
It was a big week for the McHales with Jan taking out the ladies with a very good round of 39 points, finishing one shot clear of Lynne Canavan with 38 points.
Ball comp winners were Bud Thorsen with 37 points, Peter Mangan (36), Laurie Radley (35), Ian Brown (35), Penguin Nelson (35), Dylan Gallivan (34), Alan Curnow (34) and Paul Dickens (34).
To the par three holes and nearest the pin winners were Lawrie Casey (A Grade, 3rd), Gordon Mackay (A Grade, 12th), Neil Potter (B Grade, 12th), while Tracey Wade won the Firstea voucher on the 15th.
Rory Kerr (9th) and new member Young Dock Kim (13th) won the second shot balls.
On Tuesday, Mick Pell was the A Grade winner with a score of 38 points from Frank Brocek’s 37.
David Collins was a comfortable five-shot winner in B Grade with 37 points from Kayne Crompton’s 32.
Miles Gould topped the ball comp winners with 36 points, with other ball winners being Shane Bywaters with (36), Pooch McHale (34) and Rochester’s Dave Gebbie (32).
Miles added the A Grade NTP balls on both the 3rd and 12th to his collection, Kayne Crompton picked up the B Grade NTP on the 12th, Scott Thompson (Lockington) won the second shot ball on nine and Dave Gebbie the second shot ball on the 13th.
Finally, our board and executive were returned unopposed at our AGM at the weekend.
A big congratulations and thanks to those board members, many who have been in their roles for some years.
Also, we acknowledge and thank Gavon Armstrong for his efforts as captain for the past two to three years as he hands over the reins to Paul Kuiper from next week.
A reminder that this week’s round is the annual Dom Cerrone Memorial 4BBB Stableford.

Valley View Women
Fab Flowers was the generous sponsor for Valley View’s Women’s Stroke and putting event for the Monthly Medal last Wednesday.
Von Morris was the player of the day, winning both the nett and gross in A Grade with a score of 99-24-75.
Her score also won her not only the Monthly Medal but also the play-off for the Silver Spoon, to play in the state final at Gardiner’s Run on November 9.
Von’s 28 putts also won her the putting competition.
Wendy Cox was runner-up in A Grade with 102-22-80 and also won nearest the pin.
The B Grade competition was close.
Lynne Canavan was the nett winner on a countback with 108-31-77, and she also picked up the nearest the pin.
Runner-up was Sharon Harrison, whose score of 104-27-77 also won the best gross score in B Grade.
Leanne Busch won the Firstea voucher on the third.
Valley View made a good start in the GMGA Summer Fourball Pennant last week with a 2.5 to 0.5 win over Shepparton Gold at Hill Top.
Merrigum Golf
President Greg Hall generously sponsored Merrigum’s string golf on Saturday.
For the uninitiated, string takes the place of the golfer’s handicap at the rate of one metre for each shot of handicap.
The string can be used to move the ball anywhere on the course, with the length of string equating to the distance moved discarded, but no shot is added to the player’s score.
Mostly, it is used to hole those pesky putts we all hate.
What Saturday’s event proved was that the string is better value than your handicap, because nearly half the scores were in the 60s and no one ventured into the 80s.
John Fuller had the best score of the day and was the B Grade winner with a score of 64.
Not only is John monotonously up the middle, he clearly understands how to wisely use his allocated length of string, unlike those who used it all in the first few holes or returned to the clubhouse with enough twine to tie up several bales of hay.
John was two shots better than three A Grade players, who were subjected to a countback to decide the winner.
Andrew Wood was the A Grade winner with 66 on a countback from runner-up Cory Berghofer, and also from Geoff Kirk.
Bill Johnson was the B Grade runner-up with 68.
Balls went to the numerous players who had 70 or better.
Nearest the pins were won by Michael Doherty on the sixth, James Campbell on the ninth, Simon Doherty on the jackpot 12th, and John Fuller on the 14th.
Cory Berghofer won the chook shed challenge with 14 for the four holes.
Thank you to president Greg not only for his generous sponsorship of the day, but for all the good work he has done for the club during his tenure.
He is stepping down from the role at the annual general meeting this Wednesday, but I’m sure his valued input to the club and committee will not be lost. Well done Greg.
The AGM is at 8pm.
The first round of a new season of twilight commenced last Thursday, with Gary Eden having a sensational round of 45-12-33.
Gazbo’s golf has gone to a new level over the past few months, so he had best make use of his double-figure twilight handicap, because he won’t have it for too much longer.
Simon Doherty had what would normally be a winning score of 41-6.5-34.5 but had to settle for the runner-up placing.
It was a case of birdies or bogeys for Simon, with three birdies in the 10 holes, a great effort.
Nearest the pins were won by Simon on the jackpot ninth and Bill Bray on the 14th, while Craig Doherty won least putts with 15. The two-point cut was 39.5.
This Saturday’s event is Stableford, not the three-person Ambrose listed in the syllabus.
Kyabram Bowls Club
The season has started well with wins for Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Division 1 played Rich River at home and won overall, 84 shots to 52.
Noel Reddrop’s rink won with 25 shots to 17.
They struggled early but took the front on the 14th end, and winning seven shots on the 21st end ensured a win.
Greg Shilling’s rink led from beginning to end and won with 30 shots to 14.
Joe Greco’s rink lost by a small margin, 19 shots to 21.
Division 2 played Rich River away and had a great win, winning on all rinks, 89 to 35.
Phil Denham won by one shot, 18 to 17.
They were behind until the 15th end.
They took the lead and were able to hold on for a narrow win.
Kelvin Wiffen’s team had a convincing win, 42 shots to six.
They led 11 shots to one after five ends and continued to control the game, only allowing their opponents to win four ends for the remainder of the game.
Graeme Woocock’s rink won with 29 shots to 12.
Leading after the second end, they continued to play well to come away with a terrific win.
In Division 3, Red played Rich River at home, with one winning rink able to ensure an overall win.
Kyabram won with 66 shots to 62.
Dom Perri’s team were the winners with 29 shots to 15.
A strong start saw them leading 13 shots to zero after seven ends.
They continued to bowl well and limited their opponents to winning seven ends for the remainder of the game.
Geoff Coad and his team lost in a tight game, 23 to 20.
They fought hard all game but losing three shots on the last end lost them the game.
Graham King’s rink lost 17 shots to 26.
They were well down after 12 ends, eight shots to 21.
They fought back to close the gap over the final ends.
Division 3 Black played Echuca at Echuca, losing two rinks and going down overall, 43 shots to 63.
Murray Tenace and his team lost 13 shots to 22.
Marg Cox’s team lost 10 shots to 22.
The winners on the day were Howard Tonkin’s rink, 20 shots to 19.
This was a tight game with the scores level on four occasions and both teams leading at different times.
Winning the last end gave Howard and his team the win.
Division 4 travelled to Elmore and struggled against a strong Elmore team.
Losing both rinks saw them go down 26 shots to 43.
Jill Barrett’s team lost 22 shots to nine.
They levelled the score on the sixth end but could not continue this form for the remainder of the game.
Geoff Hocking’s team had a closer game and went down 17 shots to 21.
Both teams led at different times during the game, and with one shot the difference on the last end, either team could win.
But losing three shots on the last end finished the game.
60 and Over
The Campaspe and District 60 and over bowls group held their day at Lockington on a mild spring day.
There were 30 teams of four competing for a chook; that’s 120 players approximately, as some teams had a player short.
There were four three-game winners.
Neil Dovaston’s team from Echuca ended up with two bowls near the jack.
The team of Peter Cecil lead, Dennis Smith second, Paul Leach third and skipper Neil Dovaston came second.
The winners from Elmore were Phil Mace’s team with three bowls near the jack.
The team consisted of the president Phil Mace lead, Jeff Carnie second, David Andrews third, and Rod Fiedler as their skipper.
Both teams won a chook each.
Next week is at Valley View on Wednesday, October 14 at 11am.
The contacts for next week are Graeme Topp on 0458 253 597 or Rod Donohue on 0417 633 478.
The list is full with 28 teams at present.
A request to all teams to please put your team names on the card please.
Good bowling to all.
