Murchison-Toolamba vs Girgarre
The match of the round this week was in Murchison, where the Grasshoppers and Roos played out a one goal thriller.
Although both sides are unlikely to reach finals as things stand, the two sides played with the tenacity of a final, but in the end it was Girgarre who survived the scrap 40-39.
The win does give the Roos a faint hope of finals qualification, the blue and whites moving into seventh place, still a win-and-a-half back from the top six.
Girgarre has won three of its last four after a slow start to the year.
Violet Town vs Rushworth
The Tigers had a comfortable afternoon at Violet Town Recreation Reserve, easily accounting for the lower-table Towners.
Rushworth maintained control throughout the contest, pulling away over the four quarters to win 53-29.
The result ends a short two-game slide for the Tigers (7-3), who hang on to fourth place by just two competition points.
Merrigum vs Avenel
Merrigum is holding firm in the finals spots, defeating Avenel.
The Bulldogs kept the chasers outside the finals at arm’s length with a 10-goal win over Avenel.
Merrigum was at risk of letting the Swans pass them and go into the top six with a win, but although it was a close contest throughout, the visitor had enough in the tank to win 49-39 at Avenel Recreation Reserve.
The Bulldogs (5-1-3) opened up a six-point gap between themselves and three chasing teams hoping to snatch one of the finals places.
Lancaster vs Stanhope
Lancaster rolled to a comfortable victory.
A battle between sides at the two ends of the table went as expected, Lancaster having no trouble getting by Stanhope on the Wombat’s home court.
The 40-goal margin, 63-23, seemed a fair reflection of both side’s seasons so far, Lancaster (8-1) gaining on Nagambie after the Lakers suffered a shock loss in their fixture.
The Lions are just 2-8 for the season.
Undera vs Shepparton East
The biggest mismatch possible in the competition saw the unbeaten Shepparton East visit the winless Undera.
Things followed the script of both side’s seasons so far, the Eagles jumping out to an early lead and running away with the result 66-17.
Undera is now without success through its first 10 matches.
In the biggest result of the round, Tallygaroopna continued its sparkling run of recent form, handing Nagambie only its second defeat of the season, 39-33.
The Redlegs, who also defeated Rushworth within its last three fixtures, have now won four straight.
Nagambie’s top two place is at risk, with Lancaster, level on points, holding a game in hand over the Lakers.
Longwood had the bye this week.
Next weekend’s matches will see Shepparton East host Murchison-Toolamba, while Girgarre attempts to slow Tallygaroopna’s roll on the Roos home court.
Second place will be up for grabs as Lancaster travels to Nagambie, while Stanhope is at home to Violet Town, and Merrigum hosts Undera.
Avenel is on the road in Longwood, while Rushworth has the week off.
