Corowa Rowing Club is holding its annual open day, where everyone is encouraged to try the sport.
Corowa Rowing Club president Mark Tidd said all ages were welcome, with beginners ranging from school children to those in their 50s and 60s.
“As a country club, we have great opportunities with a fleet of boats, excellent coaching and a fully equipped gym,” Mr Tidd said.
“It’s a sport where you can be outside enjoying the river, but at the same time learning a new skill and improving your fitness.”
Mr Tidd said those who joined the club were able to row socially, and take part in the Thursday night BBQs, or aim to compete in regattas, where there were events for beginners wanting to give competition a try.
At the other end of the scale, the rowing club is also competitive at state level, taking home medals earlier this year, finishing ninth in the premiership standings for champion club, and having four of the top five placings for female club champion rowers.
One of the club’s rowers, Darren McMahon, is currently in Slovenia, competing at the World Masters Rowing Championships, showing just how far you can go by rowing at Corowa.
Mr Tidd said the commraderie and friendliness in the club was well known, with more experienced rowers happy to help out those who were just starting.
“I’ve started rowing recently and it’s really enjoyable to be out on the river with others, working to become better but at the same time, enjoying each other’s company,” he said.
“And while would-be rowers are encouraged to come down, so are any who would like to try their hand as a cox steering the boat, which is another good way to participate in the sport.”
The open day kicks off at 9am and everyone is welcome to come down and try for free.
