Young netballers paused their practice to watch Moira Shire Council Administrator Susan Benedyka as she cut the ribbon and declared the redevelopment open on Thursday, July 23.
“Council is deeply committed to investing in communities right across the Shire, including our smaller towns like Waaia,” Benedyka said.
“Good local facilities make a genuine difference to people’s lives – particularly for our young people and sporting clubs.
“This is a modern, high-quality facility that will serve the community for many years to come and enhance the sporting experience for players, officials and spectators.”
Four existing courts have been replaced with two new multi-purpose courts designed to meet the standards of Netball Victoria and Tennis Australia.
There are also new shelters for players and officials, upgraded lighting, and secure fencing.
The $855,000 state-of-the-art project was a three-way partnership between Council, the Waaia community and the State Government.
The Victorian Government, through Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Regional Community Sports Infrastructure Fund, contributed $692,000, Moira Shire Council gave $133,000 and the Waaia Recreation Reserve Committee of Management’s share was $30,000.
Representing Sport and Recreation Victoria at the opening was Jenny Sloan, while Denis Brooks spoke on behalf of the Waaia Recreation Reserve Committee.
Brooks thanked the Waaia Football Netball Club team who drove the project, as well as the club’s long-term supporters, Sport and Recreation Victoria and Council.
“I never imagined we could have a facility as good as this,” he said.
“You can’t undersell the value of this facility for our kids and us as a community. It’s onwards and upwards for the Bombers.”
