I Timothy 6: 6 – 8 tells us “But Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
Philippians 4: 12 – 13: “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”
A contented person is gracious and sharing because he knows he has everything he needs.
He feels blessed and is willing to pass this blessing on to others. He is generous and gives or lends freely.
If we have an attitude of Godly contentment it should not bother us when we see evil succeeding.
We are to enjoy and be thankful for all that God blesses us with.
Contentment expresses our trust in God’s provision for us and in that contentment we won’t want those things that won’t ever satisfy.
Let’s have an attitude of gratitude and count our blessings.
My ladies’ Bible study group has for the past few weeks been studying some of the Psalms.
One that really stuck with me was Psalm 37.
The writer is thought to be either Asaph or David but whoever it was, he had a problem with his faith.
He was envious of the people who seemed to have everything — plenty of money, good health, a successful life.
What they didn’t have though was faith.
Instead of having feelings of envy, the Psalmist tells us to trust in the Lord and do good.
To have faith, to be happy in the Lord and commit our way to Him for the Lord upholds the righteous and gives them the desires of their heart.
Something else is patience.
The Psalmist says “Be still before the Lord, wait patiently for Him and be content, for those who hope in the Lord will inherit security, peace and plenty in the Promised Land.”
This was a blessing from God for those who were and are faithful to him.
When we ground our happiness and joy in Jesus we tap into an inexhaustible strength and contentment.
Today let’s choose to rejoice in the Lord always and rejoice again for His love is constant and unchanging in an ever-changing world.
The Lord is our refuge and strength and He holds us by our right hand.
That is His promise.
