Piastri declared on Wednesday he was getting closer to his ceiling as a driver, after winning seven races last year before falling short of the championship.
But with all eyes on the Melburnian in this weekend's season-opening Australian Grand Prix, the local hope is among many not sure what to entirely expect.
And as far as the McLaren driver is concerned, that is not necessarily a bad thing.
In sweeping changes of the sport's regulations, cars will this season have close to a 50-50 split between battery unit and combustible engines for power.
That will mean drivers have to manage their batteries on each lap, working out when to deploy while building it up back through braking.
That could be a challenge at Albert Park, with tighter twisty sections taken out of the track recently and the longer sweeping straights likely to deplete batteries.
There will also be less grip on offer for drivers with the downforce on cars decreased, while the drag reduction systems that assisted overtaking are gone.
Piastri is a noted fast learner, having won F3 and F2 in his first seasons before earning a podium in his rookie year in F1 in 2023.
And he believes the unknown could play into his hands.
"I like to think my brain's pretty logical and doing things for a reason is generally an important thing for me," Piastri said.
"The more I understand about these cars, then the quicker you try and learn. And I think for me, generally understanding the things I need to do comes pretty quickly.
"So hopefully that is an advantage."
The rule changes mean McLaren are no guarantee to be the fastest anymore, as it was in 2025 when Piastri's teammate Lando Norris took the championship.
But much like the Woking-based outfit have generally been the best at bringing mid-year updates in recent years, Piastri was last season's most improved.
The 24-year-old's tyre management improved significantly, as were his results over the first two-thirds of the season before the late-year fadeout.
"With this year's cars, they're so different. We're talking about adapting to things that we've never even considered as a race-car driver before," he said.
"That's a very new process and I think for me what was very positive out of last year was that the process of attacking something that was either new or I needed to get on top of worked well.
"I think you can apply that to anything."
