But that all changed when the 31-year-old’s former side Echuca defeated Shepparton in the preliminary final.
Since Sheldon’s last season with the Bottle Green in 2011, the defender has developed into one of the juggernaut’s unheralded stars.
And his presence within the Kyabram playing group reach its peaked on the biggest day of the season after being named stand-in captain in the absence of Brad Edwards and Jason Morgan.
“It’s a massive relief to get back on top,” he said.
“It had been a long week leading into the game especially when you are playing against your old side.
“That certainly added another element to the game because it feels like the stakes do go a little bit higher than usual.
“As much as you try not to focus on it, there is still a part of it which sits in the back of your mind.”
During the post-match celebrations, Sheldon was quick to brush aside any individual praise – quickly turning attention to his fellow defenders.
Against a formidable Echuca forward line, the Bombers back six thrived when their lead was threatened.
“Lochie Smith, Josh Vick and Tommy Holman all defended as if their life depended on it,” he said.
“They took marks every time when Echuca were looking dangerous and it certainly does give the rest of the team a confidence boost.
“We knew what we had to do and stuck together to hold on.”
