That excitement, however, was short-lived, as only one train arrived before it was confirmed by Inland Rail that further track-work was required before any more could stop.
September 15 was cited as the day a full service would return to Benalla, with bus-replacement services running in the meantime.
The good news for the Rose City’s commuters and train users is that the required track-work has now been completed and as of September 3, trains are once again stopping in Benalla.
The new platform at Benalla is now complete and has transformed the station precinct, providing improved access via new stairs and ramps, along with modern platform furniture, security cameras and upgraded lighting.
The old station building remains temporarily closed as work progresses on the new car park, landscaped station forecourt and pedestrian underpass connections to Mackellar St.
An Inland Rail spokesperson said the return of passenger rail services marked a significant milestone for works in Benalla.
“While there is still more work to be done, it is fantastic to see passengers already benefiting from the new and upgraded infrastructure,” the spokesperson said.
“We thank the community for their patience as we transform the stations.”
