But every farmer market needs at least one all-rounder, who will rock up with a truck full of a bit of everything.
Like the classic old fruit and veg shop from the days when people were happy to wander from shop to shop to fill the pantry instead of cramming into repetitious rows of packaged, highly processed products from unknown, or very well camouflaged, origins and quality standards, and then get jammed into gridlock at checkouts – or pay for the privilege of being your own checkout slave.
Enter Renzo Pulsoni and Rose Dolcetta.
With their stall chockers with a big range of standard vegies and endlessly rotating trays of seasonal treats.
And they have been trucking it around to markets from their Kyabram base for the past 22 years.
In their spare time, they also supply fruit direct to Melbourne.
But Renzo reckons the farmers’ markets are where all the action is.
“For us coming to markets with our produce is the most important outlet for us, they’re a great place to socialise because you don’t see a lot of people on the farm,” he said.
“I’ve always tried to grow things that are different, but things people want.
“I was one of the first with avocados around Kyabram and people said it couldn’t be done here, and they were wrong.
“It was the same with my walnuts, almonds and pistachios – the pistachios are the latest one for us to try and once again we were told it won’t work, they belong in Queensland not Kyabram.
“That was six years ago, and they are doing pretty well, and the next big challenge will be to see if they can be sold in their green husk, because for an operation my size that is an issue.”
