The league’s battle of the big cats took place at Kings Park in Seymour and looked to be an enticing contest through the first quarter.
Rochy looked good in attack, matching the Lions early before sneaking out to an 8-5 lead midway through the quarter.
Seymour responded to get back on level terms and that was where things stayed for the rest of the period, the Lions leading by a goal at quarter-time.
Rochester made another run to start the second and took the lead, but Seymour then seized control, scoring eight of the next nine to open up a six-goal gap.
The Tigers stemmed the run, but Seymour was able to incrementally add to its lead as half-time approached, heading into the main break ahead 37-28.
Neither side could do much to shift that margin for the first seven minutes of the third term, but it was the Lions that again found form at the right time, making a run to get out by 14 at the final change.
It was a lead they would hold through the last quarter, kicking another couple of goals clear in the dying minutes to win 72-56.
Permit player Matilda McIntyre, on loan from Colbinabbin during the Grasshoppers’ week off, joined Tia Webb in the goal circle for much of the game.
Webb led the way in scoring with 33, while McIntyre added 16 and Marli Cottam 6.
Although it looks significantly better than the league’s bottom two, Rochester hasn’t found a way to victory over any of the other nine sides, sitting at 2-7 at the halfway point of the year.
The three likely title favourites, Euroa, Echuca and Mooroopna top the table at 8-1 and the Cats will be Rochy’s next opponent, the two facing off at Rochester Recreation Reserve on Saturday.
