With a shower of rain falling prior to play, followed by bitterly cold winds, it was a smaller field than normal with just 25 women braving the conditions. The course was at it best but obviously as indicated by the results was not an easy one to play.

Valley View Golf Club
Midweek
A Stableford event for men and women was played at Valley View on the King’s birthday.
Peter Mangan was the winner of the men’s event with 35 points, followed by runner up Dylan Gallivan on 34 points.
Von Morris had the best score of the day to win the women’s event with 37 points. Wendy Cox was runner up, on a count back from Tracey Wade when both finished on 31 points.
Wednesday’s women’s Stroke and putting competition for the Monthly Medal was generously sponsored by Kyabram Bakery.
On a day when only two players finished with a Nett score in the 70’s, Leanne Busch was the standout player. With a score of 19-91-72, she was the A Grade winner in both net and scratch and the winner of the Monthly Medal. To top off her great day, her shot on the 15th finished centimetres from the hole to win the nearest the pin and make an easy birdie.
Wendy Cox was runner up with 21-102-81.
B Grade winner was Judy Greer, 27-102–75, whose score won her both the Nett and scratch. Helen Armstrong was runner up with 25-109-84 and she also won nearest the pin on the 15th.
Von Morris won the Firstea voucher on the 3rd and had the least putts with 26.
Weekend
Saturday’s Stableford event produced a wide range of scores from 40 points at the top of the mountain all the way down to 20 points from the men’s NAGA.
The best score of the day came from B grade winner Alan Hausler who posted the 40 point score as he cruised to a five-shot win with Lindsay Tatterson taking out the runner’s up trophy with 35 points.
In A grade reigning club champion Brett Radley produced another almost flawless round notching 38 points while playing off a handicap of five.
Like Haus he too finished well clear of the rest of the field with Lawrie Casey the runner up with 34 points.
Things were a lot closer in the ladies’ comp with Lynne Canavan putting together a round of 35 points which was good enough for a one shot win over runner up Jenni Bauerle who (for the mathematically challenged) had 34 points.
Ball comp winners were Alan Curnow with 34 points, Kevin Bauerle (33), Bill Fry (33) and John Canavan (31).
After last week it was good to see our golfers finding the target on more of the par 3 holes with Nearest the Pin trophies going to Peter Blackmore (A grade 3 rd ), John Canavan (B grade 3 rd ), Lynne Canavan (3 rd ) and Lawrie Casey (A grade 12 th ). Alan Curnow won the First Tea voucher on the 15 th with a shot to within a couple of metres of the pin and though he missed his birdie putt he tidied up for a comfortable par.
Lawrie Radley (9 th ) and Mick Gallivan (13 th ) took home the best second shot balls.
Earlier in the week Shane Bywaters won the A grade event on Tuesday with 35 points from Peter Mangan with 34 points.

Merrigum Golf Club
Merrigum Golf Club invited our on-course signage sponsors to join with members for a pairs ambrose event on Saturday.
While the weather forecast no doubt kept a few of our own members, as well as a few guests, at home, there was still a good turn-out for an enjoyable afternoon of golf.
The weather bureau did us no favours by predicting an afternoon of rain which didn’t eventuate; what did eventuate was a pleasant afternoon for golf, and even the occasional glimpse of blue sky.
Clint Prygoda had a foot in both camps as a Merrigum member and a representative of Redland Fruit, and he teamed with fellow Redland representative Greg Bennett to win the event with an excellent score for a two-person ambrose, 66-5-61.
Merrigum members all know what Clint is capable of, and quite clearly Greg is no slouch either as they went about posting a four under par off-the-stick score.
The course is playing considerably longer than it was just a couple of weeks ago, so the winning score was an impressive effort from both players. The runners-up, coincidently from the same group, were Simon Doherty and James Campbell with 71-4.25-66.75, also a very good score normally, but was made to look less so by the winners.
Ball competition winners were Bill Johnson and Bernie McGrath with 67.25 and Andrew Wood and Wink Findlay with 70 nett.
Nearest the pins were won by Simon Doherty on the sixth, James Campbell on the ninth, and Tony Borrelli on the jackpot 12th.
The chook shed challenge was a tie, so jackpots to this coming week.
The Merrigum Golf Club gratefully acknowledges the support of our on-course sponsors, and sponsors in general, which includes a number of our own members, for their ongoing support of our club. Without such support, local sporting clubs would struggle.
Winter pennant began this Sunday, with Merrigum travelling to Nagambie to take on Shepparton.
Apparently Shepparton didn’t get the memo and thought pennant started next Sunday, thus giving Geoff Kirk, Tommy Ladhams, Bruce Brown, Clint Prygoda and James Campbell each the standard 3/2 win in the event of a forfeit.
Sunday night’s 10/8 each did look better though before the adjustment. Pennant this week is hosted by Merrigum, with the home club having the bye.
This Saturday’s event is a three person Gentsomes. All players drive and then play out the hole for stableford points from the chosen drive, with the best two scores on each hole counting towards the team score.
Gazbo will fill in the details for anyone not up to speed on how it’s played.
