The annual tournament sees RSL clubs around the state compete in four-rink fours bowls at 16 different venues.
This year, Kyabram’s side headed up to Deniliquin RSL for its round of matches, taking on sides from the local region and further afield over April 11 and 12.
In a group of six, Kyabram won all of its matches to take out the section, finishing an impressive fifth overall across the state.
The Kyabram side featured 17 bowlers, mostly from Kyabram, but also featured several former players and recruits from Mooroopna, Shepparton, Rushworth and Murchison.
With the Edinburgh Shield the major RSL bowls event of the year, the team had to utilise existing connections and gel quickly on the rinks.
“The majority of players get up there on Friday for a little bit of practice on the greens if they can, but it's just a matter of making sure you bowl at your peak when the games actually start,” Kyabram RSL president Greg O’Connell said.
The Kyabram side was mostly comfortable in its early game, winning over Colac, Sale and Deniliquin Composite on Saturday.
Peter Leseur skipped Ky’s best rink on all three occasions, but some of the other rinks stepped up on the Sunday.
The side’s closest match of the tournament came on day two against Shepparton, the locals getting through by just three shots.
“That was a bit of a shock to the system, actually,” O’Connell said.
“It was two rinks up and two down and one rink was well down but managed to come back and still get beat, but it was only a narrow loss.
“That was our toughest game.”
Christopher Preddy’s rink stood up in that one with the best result against Shepparton, while Greg Shilling’s rink took its turn on top in the final match over Box Hill.
Kyabram finished 5-0 with a plus-91-shot difference across the tournament.
